: an electric incandescent lamp whose filament or rod consists of a mixture of magnesia with oxides of the rare earth metals that on being raised to a high temperature (as by a glowing platinum spiral) becomes luminous and conducting and may be kept thus by the passage of a comparatively weak current and without a vacuum
